NaI(Tl) scintillation crystals are manufactured using the Bridgman method at Epic Crystal. Currently, the largest available crystal ingot reaches dimensions of 150 mm in diameter and 400 mm in length. A new milestone is underway with the development of an ultra-large NaI(Tl) crystal measuring 1000 mm × 1000 mm × 250 mm—promising preliminary results have already been achieved.

Our product portfolio includes:

  • Bare crystals (without housing)
  • Encapsulated crystals in standard and ruggedized configurations
  • Complete detector assemblies integrated with photodetectors such as PMTs or SiPMs

Compared to other scintillation materials, NaI(Tl) offers several key advantages: high density, excellent light output, and cost-effectiveness. However, due to its hygroscopic nature, NaI(Tl) is sensitive to moisture, which can degrade optical performance if not properly protected. To ensure long-term stability and reliability, all crystals are hermetically sealed.

Standard encapsulation features an aluminum housing with an optical window. For demanding environments—such as those encountered in measurement-while-drilling (MWD) applications—we offer ruggedized versions with stainless steel or titanium housings and laser-welded seals for superior durability.

In addition to crystal production and encapsulation, we provide full detector integration services. This includes coupling with photomultiplier tubes (PMTs) equipped with standard 14-pin bases. Custom assembly options are also available, incorporating a voltage divider, preamplifier, and 4-pin connector to form a fully functional scintillation detector.

These integrated NaI(Tl) detectors are widely deployed in various industrial and scientific applications, including:
